Entry #8: Memory Lane

Dan Schneider is the creator of the American teen comedy "iCarly," which debuted on Nickelodeon from September 8, 2007, to November 23, 2012. The sitcom centers on Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove), a teenager who lives in an apartment loft with her older brother Spencer (Jerry Trainor) and their best friends Sam and Freddie (Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress) and runs her own web show called iCarly. The kids must balance their typical teenage life with the absurd scenarios their sudden celebrity puts them in as the web show gradually gains popularity online. By the fourth season, Gibby (Noah Munck), a classmate of theirs,[a] also collaborates with them on the online series.

The program was recorded at Nickelodeon on Sunset for the first five seasons before moving to KTLA Studios in Hollywood for the sixth and final season. It received five nominations for Outstanding Children's Program in the Emmy Awards. Even though the program received conflicting reviews from reviewers, viewers embraced it. The second-most watched television program in Nickelodeon history, the January 2010 episode "iSaved Your Life" attracted 11.2 million viewers. Having Cosgrove, Kress, and Trainor return, Paramount+ authorized a revival of the show in December 2020. On June 17, 2021, the revival series debuted.

At a school talent contest audition, Carly and Sam improvise humor, which tech-savvy Freddie captures and puts online without telling them. They decide to develop iCarly in response to the internet audience's need for more content after witnessing the girls' excellent chemistry and banter. The trio discovers that they have become online celebrities as their show, which includes talent competitions, recipes, problem-solving, and random dancing, receives international acclaim, throws their routine adolescent lives for a loop.

Carly produces the show in a temporary third-floor studio loft in her Seattle apartment with her older brother and guardian Spencer. Steven Shay, their father, is a US Air Force officer sent to a submarine who is frequently mentioned but is only seen in the series finale, "iGoodbye."

  1. Hi Deasia. Thank you for introducing this show. I've heard of this show before but never watched it. It sounds very humorous. Carly and Sam sound like a lot of fun. I might even consider watching it myself. Great job.

  2. Hello, Deasia, it's interesting to see how popular iCarly was, and how it has been revived for a new generation. The show was able to capture the essence of teenage life and the absurdity of sudden celebrity status. It's funny to think about how a school talent show audition could lead to a successful web show that would change the lives of the main characters. The chemistry between Carly, Sam, and Freddie was undeniable, and it's great that the show was able to showcase their talents and humor. It's great that the show was able to inspire a new generation of content creators and entertainers. I used to watch it all the time as a kid, I haven't seen the new series though.
